Community INITIATIVE

This summer, we are launching an interactive broadcasting camp for youth ages 10 to 14.

The camp is designed to help young people build creativity, confidence, teamwork, and communication skills through hands-on radio and media workshops. Participants will have the opportunity to explore interviewing, storytelling, audio production, and cooperative media in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Our goal is to create a space where youth feel empowered to share their voices and connect with their community.

By combining creativity with media literacy, the camp introduces young people to the world of community broadcasting while encouraging collaboration, curiosity, and self-expression.

We are incredibly excited to help inspire the next generation of broadcasters, creators, and community leaders here in Vancouver.

The camp is funded in-part by the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs program.

Some of what campers will learn

From production to broadcast or podcast, campers will explore aspects of how to use their brain, voice and body to share ideas.

  • Introduction to radio broadcasting, including a brief history of radio, and the different types of radio stations around the world.
  • Introduction to podcasting, including a brief history, what makes it different from radio?
  • Introduction to advertising, including a brief history. How do you write a good ad for radio?
  • News reporting & journalism. What are the 5Ws? What are media ethics?
  • Media Literacy. What is information? How do you figure out what’s true? What is misinformation and disinformation and how do you avoid spreading it?

Two dates to choose from

Each camp is 5 days long.

  • Week 1: August 17-21 (10 am – 4 pm)
  • Week 2: August 24-28 (10 am – 4pm)
  • The earliest drop-off time: 9:30 AM.
  • The latest pick-up time: 4:30 PM.

Cost

$60 per camper per day.

  • Flexible we are! So if something goes sideways before August 1st, we can refund all but $60.
  • Subsidies may be available.
