We value open and respectful dialogue and seek to build bridges of co-operation among the diverse communities we serve. We believe in fostering a healthy, sustainable environment within the organization.
Participation / Diversity
Programming in over 10 languages celebrating our community mosaic. We value the knowledge and skills that community members bring to the station. We support skill-sharing through learning, sharing and teaching in order to encourage growth within the station and throughout the broader community.
Social Justice / Accessibility
We challenge systems of oppression by promoting progressive social and economic change, and equal opportunities and outcomes for all. We work to ensure everyone can access our content and participate.
Independence
We are firmly committed to our independence as a member-owned community station in a world of media steeped in corporate domination. We remain free of corporate interests. We value and celebrate that we are community-owned alternative media.
Our History
Founded in 1975, CFRO 100.5 FM began broadcasting from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside with a simple mission: to give a voice to those who are underrepresented in mainstream media.
Over the past five decades, we’ve grown into a vibrant community radio station with over 300 volunteer programmers producing shows in more than 10 languages. Our programming reflects the diversity of Vancouver, featuring everything from Indigenous perspectives and immigrant stories to punk rock and experimental electronic music.
As a co-operative, we are owned and operated by our members. This structure ensures we remain accountable to the community and free from corporate influence. Every decision is made democratically, keeping our programming authentic and responsive to community needs.
Today, we continue to broadcast 24/7 from our studios in the heart of the Downtown Eastside, serving listeners across Vancouver and around the world via our live stream.
