Newsletter for February, 2026 – Celebrate Radio

February flowers in Vancouver
Build Culture!

It is one of the best things about community radio. We do not simply broadcast culture. We build it together, through the music we share, the stories we trust each other with, and the conversations that do not always have room elsewhere.

Today, on World Radio Day, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who keeps that work going. Thank you to our listeners who tune in and spread the word, and to our volunteers, programmers, and staff who show up week after week to make independent, community-based radio possible.

I also want to recognize the wider network across the country. Campus, community, and Indigenous non-profit stations are often doing the quiet, steady work of reflecting local life, making space for underrepresented voices, and keeping communities connected.

With gratitude,

Gwendolyn

Black History Month Showcase

Friday, February 27, 2026 @ 5:00 PM

Museum of Vancouver

1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver BC

The Vancouver showcase features live performances from Ndidi Cascade, Dee Daniels, Khari McClelland, and Henri Brown, with DJ and production support from Carl Allen. Veteran Vancouver Cooperative Radio star, broadcaster Lynden V. serves as MC for the evening.

Each artist brings a distinct voice shaped by history, movement, and community. Ndidi Cascade’s songwriting blends folk, soul, and roots traditions, while Dee Daniels’ celebrated jazz career reflects decades of vocal artistry. Khari McClelland weaves ancestral storytelling into contemporary sound, connecting generations through music, and Henri Brown delivers dynamic R&B performances grounded in West Coast influence.

Founded to research, preserve, and amplify Black Canadian music history, the CBMA has featured more than 50 artists across exhibitions and live events nationwide. Its Vancouver debut marks a significant expansion of the archive’s live programming and reflects its evolving role as a national cultural resource.

The event is free to the public. Additional details and registration information are available at https://thecbma.com/

Celebrate World Radio Day by tuning in!

Everyday, dozens of volunteers spend hours producing radio shows to inform and entertain you, our beloved listeners. But it’s hard work to sustain an independent and non commercial radio station.

That why we invite you to stand with us and join the Community Radio Initiative now, by writing to to your MP to secure funding for community radio. We desperately need this core funding to continue.

Special programming today, Friday, Feb 13 at noon

Join us for an interview with Barry Rook, Executive Director of the National Campus and Community Radio Association (NCRA), with CJLX about the sector.

It will be followed by Voices of Identity in the Age of AI, produced by Dr. Gloria Khamkar, independent radio producer, and media academic.

While the global theme of this year’s World Radio Day focuses on AI, this programme approaches it from a human-centred perspective – exploring how radio continues to amplify authentic voices and lived experiences in an increasingly AI-shaped media landscape.

Contributors from around the globe (including Ukraine, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan, UK, US, Canada, India, Hong Kong) recorded their own audio reflections, reinforcing ownership of storytelling and highlighting the unique power of voice in creating connection.

Remembering Paul Norton

We recently lost a stalwart of community radio, Paul Norton. Paul was one of the heroes of Vancouver Cooperative Radio.

In his almost 50 years of service, Paul worked as an on-air host or operator on numerous shows along with serving on the station’s Board of Directors and working in other administrative roles.

His dedication to the station was boundless.

We will all miss Paul’s devotion, sense of humour and gentle spirit. Click below for tributes from collaborators and colleagues and to share your own. Rest in peace, dear friend.
