Spring Marathon Newsletter – April 10-19

image_p1.png

It may be April 1st, but we’re not fooling when we say it’s time for the Vancouver Co-op Radio’s Spring Marathon, April 10th –19th.

Our goal this year is to raise $50,000, about one-eighth of our annual operating budget. That’s no prank—it’s the real support we need to keep our facilities running and your favourite local voices on the air.

And the fun doesn’t stop there. In May, we’ll continue the celebration with our Birthday Party, a lively fundraiser featuring live music, community spirit, and plenty of reasons to dance. Together, these events help ensure Co-op Radio stays strong and independent for another great year.

While April 1st might bring a few pranks, our commitment to community radio is no joke. We rely on listeners like you to help us reach our goal and keep local radio thriving.

with a smile,

gwendolyn

What’s On the Air at Co-op Radio?

There’s always something new to discover on the dial. Here are a few standout programs that capture the spirit of Co-op Radio:

ReThreading Madness

Tuesday at 5pm

Repeated Monday at 7 am

ReThreading Madness brings together voices from around the world to rethink what mental health means and reclaim the right to self-definition. The show creates space for survivors, advocates, artists, researchers, and thinkers whose work or lived experience helps reimagine healing, identity, and justice.

Conversations are trauma-informed, respectful, and real: stories that restore dignity and connection around issues too often silenced by stigma. Research shows that one in two of us will face a mental health challenge in our lifetime, making these discussions essential.

The name ReThreading Madness is an act of reclamation. Within the Mad Pride Movement, words once meant to shame, like “crazy” or “loony”, become expressions of resistance and belonging. The show also avoids terms like mental illness or disorder, choosing instead to center lived experience and resilience.

Produced at Vancouver Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5 FM, re‑aired on CKXU 88.3 FM in Lethbridge, and shared through the Mental Health Radio Network and podcast platforms, ReThreading Madness now reaches listeners in more than 25 countries.

Why a Duck?

Thursdays at 2:30 pm

Expect jazz, classics, and a generous helping of irreverent chaos on Why a Duck?, a music show guided by longtime Co-op Radio curmudgeon Kerry. With a rotating cast of younger, knowledgeable co‑hosts, Kerry mixes genres and generations for a sound that’s unpredictable, eclectic, and always entertaining.

Whether you’re in it for the witty banter or the deep cuts, Why a Duck? proves that good music—and good company—never go out of style.

Blackfeather

Monday at 2:30 pm
Repeated Sunday at 7 am

Blackfeather welcomes people from all walks of life to share their knowledge, experiences, talents, passions, and hopes. Each episode features voices that uplift, inspire, and advocate for those who are too often unheard, offering a gathering place for wisdom, creativity, and lived truth.

The stories shared on Blackfeather become part of a growing legacy, preserving teachings and experiences that inspire reflection and offer guidance to listeners everywhere. Through open, thoughtful conversations, guests share perspectives that connect us, remind us, and encourage a deeper understanding of one another.

Produced and hosted by Christine Marie, Blackfeather celebrates the power of collective storytelling and the enduring strength found in shared humanity.

Celebrating 10 Years of the Wetland Project

Co-op Radio was the first to broadcast the Wetland Project “slow radio” event, and we’re proud to continue our support a decade later!

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 24-hour broadcast, airing on International Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22. Over the past ten years, the Wetland Project has grown into a cherished Earth Day tradition, now heard on 57 radio stations and streamed in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Join us as we celebrate this remarkable collaboration between art, sound, and the natural world—an immersive listening experience that invites audiences to pause, reflect, and connect with the rhythms of the environment.
